EL College Success (UCC Dual Credit option for HD 100 College Success) Teacher: TBD
This course is designed for students who are interested in pursuing a higher graduation. It aims to provide learner-centered instruction in strategies for achieving success for college, and in life. Topics include decision-making, discovering your personal identity, goal setting, time management, memory strategies, study skills, diversity, communication, and use of resources, taking responsibility, and other skills that will allow students the opportunity to thrive in the culture of college. This course is recommended for students considering attending a post-secondary school upon high school graduation or students wanting to complete dual credit courses. This course may be course may be offered for dual credit through College Now for 3 college credits and one-half Phoenix credit and apply toward high school graduation requirements, with Instructor Approval.
EL Community 101 Leadership Teacher: Maggie Ulman, mulman@roseburgphoenix.com
This course focuses on providing students with opportunities to develop leadership skills and community awareness through civic engagement and professional development. Along with fundraising, completing campus beautification projects, and logging several hours of volunteer service, students will work collaboratively to complete the annual grant project. This project consist of students, as a class, developing a mission statement that will be used to determine to whom they will award a $5,000 grant provided to the class annually.As a part of this project students will also coordinate and execute the annual grant award ceremony & volunteer recognition breakfast that is held at the end of each academic year. Instructor Approval required.
EL Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA) Teacher: Diana Juárez, djuarez@roseburgphoenix.com
This course focuses on providing students with opportunities to develop business and leadership skills through community awareness. A major requirement of the course is completion of civic engagement and professional development activities. Along with fundraising, completing community service projects, logging several hours of volunteer service, students will work collaboratively to prepare for state competition. Students are expected to obtain their food handlers certificate in order to volunteer at the Umpqua Local Good store. Instructor Approval required.

This course is fast paced and hands on. It is designed to prepare students with the skills necessary to physically take care of themselves, their shelter, hygienic and nutritional health. Students will understand how to budget, prepare a resume, search for employment, understand the process of financial responsibility, and daily habits to leading a healthy life.

This course allows students to explore the various factors that play a role in their personal finances from local and state levels to federal and national trading. Students will also learn about banking, taking out loans, and different forms of investments. The goal of this class is to help students become more competent in their spending, purchasing and investing habits by exposing them to the various options available to them.
EL Test Preparation: Monsters & Societies Teacher: Diana Juárez, djuarez@roseburgphoenix.com
This goal of this course is to explore the relationship between society and literature by focusing on monsters. The monsters that we create reveal so much about our greatest fears and reflect that which we see happening around us. In this course, we will not only read literature about monsters, we’ll look at these works from a historical perspective to better understand the motivation of the author and why the monsters became so beloved to us. This course will provide students with activities in analytical thinking and with the skills and strategies associated with standardized test taking.

This course explores the history and influence of hip hop while examining the development of lyrical styles, fusions & rhymes. Some of the content covered in this course is intended for a mature audience & thus, parental approval is required.

This course explores the writings of contemporary authors. This class will serve to explore the “voice of America” by reading essays, short stories and selections from modern writers. We will explore writings from a variety of genres in order to paint a picture of what is happening in America.
